This year’s Week of Science, which focused on digitization and sustainability, kicked off with a plenary conference on 9 November 2020.

In our previous articles, we reported that the University of Dunaújváros is organizing the Week of Science in an unusual way this year. The use of carbon-free energy, a priority for the institution, was one of the main topics of Monday. More than 140 people attended the event.

Following the opening of Rector Dr. István András, Prime Ministerial Commissioner for Industrial and Regional Development, Dr. Dénes Galambos held his welcome speech. He highlighted the present and future possibilities of the University of Dunaújváros. He gave an insight into Paks II. project, by  summing up the development of project-related activities in a few words. Dr. Galambos emphasized, that in spite of the negative effects of the pandemic situation, UOD and its management were able to cope with this difficult period.

The event continued with presentations by plenary guests. As the first speaker, Katalin Sebők, Vice President of Corporate Innovation of the National Office for Research, Development and Innovation, presented the activities of NKFIH in her presentation entitled "Innovative Present, Successful Future".

János Cziczer Operational Director at Paks II. Nuclear Power Plant Ltd. spoke about actualities in the Paks II. project. The participants of the presentation were able to see the plans of Hungary's largest investment at the moment, to see the service and reactor buildings with the help of a virtual walk, and to get to know the main parts of the development.

Dr. Balázs Németh, Deputy Director of the Institute of Human Development and Cultural Studies of the University of Pécs, Executive President of the MellearN Association, gave an interactive lecture entitled "The role of higher education lifelong learning in achieving sustainability goals".

The morning plenary presentations were closed by the presentation of Dr. Pál Kovács, Secretary of State for the Maintenance of Paks Nuclear Power Plant Capacity. He highlighted the role of nuclear energy in decarbonisation.

In the afternoon the event continued with the sessions of our institutes. The Institute of Engineering, Information Technology, Social Sciences and the Teacher Training Center were waiting for all those interested with interesting lectures.

Institute section meetings continue until Tuesday afternoon. On Wednesday, talented students will be the focus of the program series in an unusual way. This year we are holding the Scientific Student Conference again. We encourage everyone to take a look at the online presentations.
